La Mesa mean “the table” in Spanish because of its plateau type land. La mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912 under the laws of the State of California. There are five members to the city council and the current mayor is Art Madrid.
La Mesa has two school districts, Grossmont District and La Mesa-Spring Valley District. There are many Elementary schools in La mesa which include; Roman Elementary, Maryland Avenue Elementary, Murdock Elementary, Murray Manner Elementary, Northmont Elementary, Lemon Avenue Elementary, Vista La Mesa Elementary, Liberty Charter School and the San Diego Jewish Academy. La Mesa is known for their October Festival, it is at the beginning of October and over 200,000 people make it to the festival. There is also a 1950s car show that take s place every summer in downtown La Mesa.
